Stainless steel is a metal alloy that includes
chromium at a percentage of 11% or higher with other metals such as molybdenum
and nickel. Stainless steel alloys have excellent corrosion resistance and heat
resistance, making them ideal for specific applications including steam
turbines, boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems in the aerospace
industry.
Corrosion resistance is one of the most common uses
of stainless steel plumbing fittings. In applications where high-temperature
oxidation resistance is necessary, or even in applications where
high-temperature strength is needed, stainless steels are most commonly used
for their high-temperature properties.
A chart shows that scaling resistance is also
influenced by the chromium content as corrosion resistance is, as the following
graph shows. With chromium contents of at least 18%, austenitic steels are generally
capable of operating up to 870°C, and Grades 309, 310, and 2111HTR (UNS S30815)
are even higher. Martensitic and Ferritic steels function at lower operating
temperatures because they are less resistant to oxidation. A Ferritic grade
446, with approximately 24% chrome, is an exception to this. It can withstand
scaling up to 1100°C, and it can be used for high-temperature applications.
As a general rule, the degree to which a material
can resist distortion over a long period when exposed to a hot temperature is
expressed in terms of creep strength. Stainless steels made from austenitic
materials are particularly suitable in this regard. As with stainlesssteel pipe fittings, its strong corrosion resistance and high
content of chromium make it highly resistant to scaling at very high
temperatures and improves its high-temperature strength.
